Daily Dose 0238 - The Smashing Pumpkins

0238. The Smashing Pumpkins - Mayonaise

Brilliant song from The Pumpkins' 1993 breakthrough album Siamese Dream. The Chicago band fronted by lead singer Billy Corgan were the first group I really got into, and also, headlined the first rock concert I ever attended.

The show took place Friday, September 13, 1996 at the Corel Centre (now Scotiabank Place) in my hometown of Kanata, Ontario. Oddly enough, the 13th was the same day 2Pac passed away after being shot 6 days earlier along the Las Vegas Strip.

Daily Dose 0232 - Modest Mouse

0232. Modest Mouse - The World At Large

Ice-age heat wave, can't complain
If the world's at large, why should I remain?
Walked away to another plan
Gonna find another place, maybe one I can stand
I move on to another day
To a whole new town with a whole new way...
A tasty little treat from Modest Mouse--the Issaquah, Washington indie rockers who formed as a group way back in 1993.

"The World At Large" is from the band's 4th LP Good News for People Who Love Bad News (2004) and directly precedes their über-popular hit "Float On" in the tracklisting.

0231. The Who - Eminence Front

Heard this earlier tonight during the Dallas Mavericks' player intros before Game 3 of the NBA Finals. Here's hoping for a repeat of Dirk and co.'s incredible performance on Thursday to even the series. Down with the Evil Empire! Go Mavs Go!!!

Daily Dose 0229 - DANGERDOOM

0229. DANGERDOOM - Old School (feat. Talib Kweli)

"It's just that I'm old school like that, roll that rap over soul loops like that..."

From MF DOOM 's epic 2005 collabo album The Mouse and the Mask with super-producer Danger Mouse. The pair teamed up to form DANGERDOOM and are accompanied by Mr. Talib Kweli on this track paying homage to what else? The "Old School". Duh.

0227. Shaquille O'Neal - You Can't Stop The Reign (feat. The Notorious B.I.G.)

Shaq just announced his retirement from the game of basketball after 19 great seasons. The 4-time NBA Champion and 3-time NBA Finals MVP made the announcement on Twitter today.

To honor the Diesel, here's a solid track he did with Biggie called "You Can't Stop The Reign" from his 1996 album of the same name.

Sick, sick track from one half of the former revered underground hip-hop duo Binary Star. "Enecs Eht No Kcab" ("Back On The Scene" spelled backwards) comes from One Be Lo's 2005 album S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M. A fitting song today with the official announcement that the NHL is returning to Winnipeg! Awesome news! Next up, Quebec City!!!

Daily Dose 0225 - Elzhi

0225. Elzhi - Detroit State of Mind

*Changed the track from "The Genesis" to "Detroit State of Mind" at the last minute

Elzhi's reinterpretation of Nas' classic Illmatic--appropriately dubbed Elmatic--is based on the former Slum Village member's upbringing in Detroit, which happened to be remarkably similar to that of Queensbridge's finest during his heyday.

Without question, a daunting task for any MC is to measure their skills against the high esteem of a classic LP. Fortunately, in this case, Elzhi excels and surpasses with flying colors, while carving out a unique identity for Elmatic in the process.

Will Sessions' excellent instrumental work on the project offer a fresh spin on the original's familiar backdrops, and provide Elzhi with a Lane to invoke his most vivid Memories. The end result is truly something to behold.

Check out "Detroit State of Mind" for further confirmation...

Daily Dose 0224 - 50 Cent

0224. 50 Cent - Power of the Dollar

From 50 Cent's unreleased 2000 debut album of the same name. When Columbia Records found out that 50 got shot 9 times, the record was shelved permanently and he was subsequently dropped from the label.

It is rumored that the infamous shooting incident was in retaliation for 50's lyrics on his song "Ghetto Qu'ran (Forgive Me)", another track from the Power of the Dollar album.

Daily Dose 0223 - The Clash

0223. The Clash - London Calling

In honor of my favorite soccer club, Manchester United, who face Spanish powerhouse Barcelona in the 2011 UEFA Champions League Final today at New Wembley Stadium in London, England.

Daily Dose 0222A,B - Jay-Z

0222A. Jay-Z - 22 Two's

Roc-A-Fella y'all. "22 Two's" hails from Jay-Z's glorious debut Reasonable Doubt (1996). Not bad timing for Daily Dose #222, eh? Get it? Got it? Alright, good. Moving on...

0222B. Jay-Z - Heart of the City (Ain't No Love)

Another classic from Young Hova, this time, courtesy of his 5 mic certified 2001 album The Blueprint (released on 9/11 in fact).

Today, I'm making the all-too-familiar trip from Ottawa to Toronto, but this time it's a little different. This time, I'll be doing so with a cloud of uncertainty hanging over my head.

Yeah, waiting to hear back from a job that will change my life is definitely starting to wear thin. Truth be told, I'm feeling like Jay on this track, where's the love??
