Brilliant song from The Pumpkins' 1993 breakthrough album Siamese Dream. The Chicago band fronted by lead singer Billy Corgan were the first group I really got into, and also, headlined the first rock concert I ever attended.

The show took place Friday, September 13, 1996 at the Corel Centre (now Scotiabank Place) in my hometown of Kanata, Ontario. Oddly enough, the 13th was the same day 2Pac passed away after being shot 6 days earlier along the Las Vegas Strip.

Elzhi's reinterpretation of Nas' classic Illmatic--appropriately dubbed Elmatic--is based on the former Slum Village member's upbringing in Detroit, which happened to be remarkably similar to that of Queensbridge's finest during his heyday.

Without question, a daunting task for any MC is to measure their skills against the high esteem of a classic LP. Fortunately, in this case, Elzhi excels and surpasses with flying colors, while carving out a unique identity for Elmatic in the process.

Will Sessions' excellent instrumental work on the project offer a fresh spin on the original's familiar backdrops, and provide Elzhi with a Lane to invoke his most vivid Memories. The end result is truly something to behold.

0221A. Saigon - Letter to Omnipotent

This track serves as Saigon's version of Nas' classic "One Love", a letter to his friend Omnipotent, who was locked up at the time of recording. The song is one of my favorites from Sai-Giddy's 2002 mixtape The Yardfather Volume 1: The Best of Saigon.

I first heard the compilation in early 2003 and was instantly impressed. The mixtape earned the young rapper high praise and essentially put Saigon on the map once again--only this time--in the hip-hop world. Thus, making him one of the genre's most sought after free agents.

After the ensuing bidding war, Saigon signed with Atlantic Records and the rest is history...well, not quite. Numerous delays and an abundance of red tape nearly put an end to Sai's career. Even a few cameos on HBO's Entourage wasn't enough for his record to see the light of day.

Seasons changed and months turned into years, as anticipation for his major label debut--originally slated for a 2007 release--all but dried up, until...

0221B. Saigon - Bring Me Down, Pt. 1

Finally, in May 2008, Saigon was able to obtain his release from Atlantic, while securing full ownership rights to his long-awaited solo album The Greatest Story Never Told.

Along with the majority of the production being handled by Just Blaze, the extended delay proved to be very beneficial for Saigon. Not only has he sharpened his skills on the mic, the breadth of his subject matter reflects individual growth and maturity.

Wrapped in veracity much like his lauded 2002 Yardfather mixtape, Sai's new material does so without sounding preachy, while refusing to sacrifice a shred of ferocity in the rapper's delightful delivery. True dat.

"Bring Me Down, Pt. 1" is no exception. The song is a triumphant ballad of achieving goals and realizing dreams, despite whatever obstacles may be in the way. Props to Saigon for getting his music to the masses! Solid track and album...check it out!!!

Obviously this wasn't a chart-topper, but quite a piece of music in my opinion. Love the trumpets and the new age beat. It's original sounding and a bit ominous--definitely worth a listen.

Many apologies, the basis of this entire site-music-has been missing for the past couple of days due to the fact that the mp3 hosting site I use is down and apparently extremely slow to get up.

Don't know what's going on over there, but since 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage' over and over again, I figured it was best to put Jonny P's Music on hold until everything is back in order.

This problem has happened in the past but fortunately it didn't last long, so I'm hopeful all the great tunes on here will be restored sooner rather than later.

Standout track from my favorite Atmosphere album, 2001's compilation disc Lucy Ford: The Atmosphere EPs. "If I Was Santa Claus" shows Slug delving a bit deeper in subject matter, answering some of life's age-old questions for himself, as Ant sprinkles in a sampling of "O Holy Night" to great effect.

And if I did have a choice, I'd never want to live forever
Just let me have a voice, so I can make my points
I can't imagine running a race with no finish line
Just let me keep my pace and make to most of my time

So many quotable lines in this one, it was tough to narrow it down. Do yourself a favor and lend your ear for a quick listen. Incredible imagery enclosed.

"Guarantees" was the first single from the group's 2008 album When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold. Solid track that sees Slug battling through the daily grind while humming, rapping, and singing his way over a couple of emotionally infused guitar licks. Brilliant in its simplicity and poignant delivery. Indeed.

Daily Dose 0191 - Proof (R.I.P.)

Today marks the 5th anniversary of Proof's death. Tragically, the D12 member was shot and killed during an altercation at a Detroit bar on 8 Mile Road. About a year and a half before the fatal incident occurred, the events depicted in best friend Eminem's music video for "Like Toy Soldiers" were eerily prophetic, as Proof was gunned down in a drive-by shooting.

"Kurt Kobain" borrows its title from the famed artist who committed suicide in 1994. The song serves as a lyrical suicide note penned by Proof, who takes his own life as the music closes with a single gunshot. Again, very dark and foreboding considering the way the man's life ended, but it does offer a certain measure of hope within.

The track details everything Proof was thankful for at the time of recording and displays the immense amount of gratitude he had for all of those who supported him through the years. This truly is as real as it gets. From his August 2005 album Searching For Jerry Garcia.

Intriguing song to say the least. I don't have a clue what inspiration lies beneath this lyrical enigma by L.A.'s own Silversun Pickups, but I sure do enjoy the finished product. Have a listen for yourself and see if you can draw a somewhat decent conclusion. (Because I can't!)

Anyways...regardless of its meaning, one thing is for certain, it's a great song. "Three Seed" can be found on the band's 1st full LP Carnavas (2006).

"Santeria" was on Sublime's third and final self-titled album from 1996. The record was originally supposed to be called Killin' It, but due to the death of lead singer Bradley Nowell to a heroin overdose shortly before the album's release, the name was changed.

Song description from Wiki:

This song tells the story of a jealous ex-boyfriend pursuing to reclaim his ex-girlfriend from a man. Nowell refers to the man as "sancho" and his ex-girlfriend as "heina." In Mexico, a man who steals another man's girl is often referred to as "el Sancho" and a man's woman or girlfriend is referred to as "heina."

I recently went to visit family and a couple of my cousins listen to them, so that's where I first heard of these cats.

Not for everyone I'm sure but after listening to Classics and their latest LP4, I gotta say I've become a fan. They've also put out two remix albums featuring various rappers (Vol. 1 and Vol. 2).

It's also great as music in the background because of the lack of lyrics. Anyways, they keep the toes-a-tappin'.

To commemorate the Dose's 187th edition is none other that the song which brought you the infamous lyrics "1-8-7 on an undercover cop." Creepin' and crawlin' through the hood with a young gangsta rapper, the "maniac, lunatic, call him Snoop Eastwood."

"Deep Cover" marks Snoop Dogg's very first appearance on record, and was released a little over 19 years ago to this day on April 4, 1992. The track was included on the movie soundtrack for the Laurence Fishburne-starring film of the same name.

Quite the debut for Snoop at the age of 20, making the first of many legendary collabos with the mighty D-R-E. Now if Detox would drop this century we'd all be golden! Still waiting, 10 years and counting...

Real-time Records #4 - Not By A Long Shot

One of the more personal songs I have written/recorded to date. Due to the serious nature of its subject matter, I admit, I was a little hesitant to post this on the site.

"Not By A Long Shot" deals with the topic of domestic violence. Someone I will always hold very dear to my heart was the victim of some absolutely brutal stuff last year and there was nothing I could do about it. While she was suffering from the physical abuse endured, I could sense the mental torment and damage that was accumulating as well.

Despite my best efforts to be there for her, she was unable to completely cut off ties with her abuser. Sad but true. A point which drove me crazy because I truly felt that her life was at risk. To this day, I still swell up with emotion whenever I think about it.

Staring out the window, my mind wandered to this place on a recent bus ride from Ottawa to Toronto in February. I was listening to a bunch of instrumentals and when I came across this beat by El-P, the thoughts began to flow. I started typing some lyrics into my BlackBerry, and by the time I got back to Toronto, I had finished the song.

The background to this story is far too personal and complicated to justify explaining here, but a lot of the emotions on this track come from the overwhelming frustration I felt when there was nothing I could do to make things better. I felt terrible about it, I still do. I hate the fact that I couldn't help someone when they needed it most.

The repeated refrain after my verse that "it's not over...not by a long shot" carries with it two meanings...

First of all, the abuse is not over--not by a long shot. Even if things get better for a short period of time, how long will it last? The established cycle of abuse will return sooner or later, and with it, the same violent conclusions.

Secondly, is the more hopeful message to keep fighting because it's not over--not by a long shot. Free your mind, body and soul before it's too late. No one deserves to live like that under any circumstance. Ever.

If she's out there reading this, I wish her the best and hope she finds peace some day. If I had the power to do more, I would have, but I know I did everything I possibly could.

If you know anyone that is the victim of domestic violence, please give them your full support to help them get out of these harmful situations. Do not let these crimes go unreported and unpunished. Any coward that raises his hand to a woman should be locked up.

Buckle your seatbelts...

Their lead singer/guitarist Yes Alexander did a collabo album with hip-hop producers Blue Sky Black Death called Slow Burning Lights in November 2008. Having enjoyed the vibes emitting from my speakers, I did a little research and discovered that Yes belonged to The Casual Lust.

"Night Falls" comes from the 2nd pressing of the Lust's self-titled debut EP (2006), which I believe was available for free download on the group's site when I stumbled upon their existence.

This song is enough to bring Brian McKnight to tears...

The earnest emotion in Yes' voice screams of love scorn and many hardships endured--or even more poetic--the many brushstrokes that make up a beautifully tragic painting.

Somewhat off the grid from what I'd normally listen to, but still dope nonetheless. Respeck.

I'm no country fan--I'll tell you that, but if more country sounded remotely close to this, I'd probably change my attitude. Sadly, it's more of the mainstream pop crap that I hear briefly before changing the channel. Yet I digress...check them out, they're original, catchy and worth a listen.

One of my favorite rappers doing his thang today. Qwel is a beast on any beat he chooses to bless with his gifted penmanship. But whenever he faces a blank page and anything produced by his partner in crime Maker, the Chicago MC always manages to take his game to a whole 'nother level.

The duo have now teamed up for 3 full albums to date, and coincidentally, a song from each of those LP's has found their way onto the 'Daily Dose'.

Qwel & Maker first collaborated in 2004 on The Harvest, however, they did not join forces again for 5 years as Qwel completed a number of other projects with different producers. The pair reunited for 2009's So Be It and kept the momentum going with the release of Owl (September 2010).

"Letting Life Pass By" comes from Owl, the latest in the group's trio of albums. Qwel sets a relentless pace on the track and draws from what appears to be an endless arsenal of rhymes.

The nostalgia emanating from Maker's instrumental suits the lyrical content perfectly here too, as Qwel stresses the importance of making the most of one's time on Earth. Deeeep...anyways, enough talky, give'r a listen already!

Another absolute gem from Ali's 2nd studio album Shadows On The Sun circa 2003. Atmosphere's resident beatmaker Ant handles all the instrumental work on the record and the resulting artistry rivals anything Slug has ever created over similar sonic landscapes. Not that it's a competition, just making a healthy comparison is all.

Since Brother Ali hasn't graced the 'Daily Dose' in just under a year, I figured it was about time to showcase his ridiculous command of the English language once again. The mic skills he displays on "Champion..." are clearly representative of the song's title. Superior talent and hard work joining forces to achieve one thing--winning!

Yeah, I think it's getting a little old too. Regardless, give this track a quick listen--best 4 minutes of your life, guaranteed!

0183. Gang Starr - Full Clip

"Big L rest in peace..."

Nice tribute to legendary MC Lamont 'Big L' Coleman, who had passed away in February 1999, only a few months before the track debuted in July. The memorable intro helped set the tone for Gang Starr's '99 compilation double-disc Full Clip: A Decade of Gang Starr. A record which featured the best of their entire musical catalog, minus their final album The Ownerz (released 4 years later in 2003).

"Full Clip" was one of three tracks recorded especially for the greatest hits project, and comes complete with your recommended dose of Premo scratches between verses. Guru is at his monotone best over the rugged instrumental, dishing out his own brand of lyrical justice:

Attackin' like a slick Apache, lyrics are trigger happy
Blowin' back your wig piece just for the way your lookin' at me
Cock back, blaow! I hit you up right now
I don't know why so many of y'all wanna be thugs anyhow

That entire 3rd verse is pure fire, some of my favorite Guru material hands down. Really makes you wonder what the group could have accomplished had they stayed together beyond 2006. Truly a shame they didn't record more material, and now, they will no longer have that chance.

With Guru's passing last year (April 19, 2010), the reunion will sadly never happen. Fortunately, in a best-case scenario of music news, DJ Premier announced in December 2010 that "he's assembled...Guru verses from all over the world and it enabled (a) posthumous album to be made." The CD/DVD combo is supposed to drop sometime in 2011, and with Premo in charge, it should be solid. Can't wait to hear it!

Without a doubt, my favorite track from the incomparable Bob Dylan. A man whose career has spanned over 5 decades with music that has done nothing but stand the test of time. A truly remarkable figure and someone I would unflinchingly call a living legend.

"If You See Her, Say Hello" is taken from his 15th studio album Blood On The Tracks, which was released in January 1975. The song has Dylan reminiscing of a long lost love, someone he still misses and cares about deeply, but is hesitant in letting his true feelings known.

She might think that I've forgotten her
Don't tell her it isn't so

Those two lines really capture the essence of the song for me. Having had similar sappy feelings, the accuracy in which he depicts those emotions is absolutely mind-blowing. As the song progresses, Dylan warms to the idea of a possible reconciliation.

Sundown, yellow moon, I replay the past
I know every scene by heart, they all went by so fast
If she's passing back this way, I'm not that hard to find
Tell her she can look me up, if she's got the time

Despite their 'falling out' years ago, Dylan still can't shake her from his memory.

She still lives inside of me, we've never been apart

Real talk. The question of 'what if?' certainly comes to mind in this instance. I'm sure all of this looks completely ridiculous from an outside point of view, but being inside that crazy lovesick mentality is not an easy thing to let go of.

Brilliant song to say the least. First heard it on Californication during its 1st season, as Hank Moody's extremely complicated relationship with Karen alludes to this Dylan record on numerous occasions. The only time Hank isn't trying to win back his love, is when he's screwing things up for himself--which happens a lot. The show may have 'jumped the shark' in the 3rd season but the first 2 are still worth checking out. True story.

Raising Hell on April Fools with Run-D.M.C. and their classic 1986 track "It's Tricky". The Hollis, Queens trio gained widespread acclaim in the mid-80's and are often considered to be one of the most influential acts in hip-hop history.

With their trademark Adidas firmly planted on the urban terrain of New York City, the groundbreaking group released a total of 7 albums from 1984 to 2001, and was comprised of Reverend Run, D.M.C., and their DJ, the late Jam-Master Jay. (R.I.P.)

Run-D.M.C.'s unique blend of rap and rock expanded their audience and helped them earn the kind of mainstream recognition previously unknown to hip-hop artists. While that level of impact is difficult to gauge, it is certain that the group's success did contribute greatly to the increased popularity of hip-hop music in the mid-to-late-80's.

FYI: Rev Run is actually the younger brother of Russell Simmons, the co-founder of Def Jam Recordings. And although Run-D.M.C. was never signed to the label, they were managed by Russell and produced by fellow Def Jam co-founder Rick Rubin.

Anyways...enjoy the day and try not to do anything too stupid out there. I'm talking Toronto FC levels of stupidity here. Pretty hard to replicate but please be careful nevertheless. Quite the bad joke they turned out to be. Yikes.

"Cruisin' down the street in my 6-4..."

Fellow N.W.A member Ice Cube originally wrote "Boyz-N-The-Hood" for another group on Ruthless Records called H.B.O., but after they turned the song down, Eazy-E made it into one of his most easily recognized and distinguished tracks.

The song first appeared on 1987's N.W.A and the Posse before being remixed and included on Eazy's debut album Eazy-Duz-It one year later.

Although he may not have penned the lyrics himself, Eazy sure made them his own upon recording. The song suits his personality perfectly and the way he breaks down his day-to-day street life so matter-of-factly is quite frankly, hilarious. I can't help but laugh every time I hear this:

I gotta get drunk before the day begins
Before my mother starts bitchin' about my friends

5 or 6 years ago I remember bumpin' this song while I was cruisin' around Kanata and laughing so hard that I went right through a stop sign. A cop pulled me over but fortunately, I was let off the hook without getting a ticket--thanks to that giant horseshoe, which had apparently just come into my possession. Now, if you know what's best for you, "don't quote me boy cuz I ain't said shit."

0179. Ultramagnetic MC's - Ease Back

"Ease Back" to 1988 with the Ultramagnetic MC's and their classic cut from the group's debut album Critical Beatdown. Originally, the record was not rated by The Source upon release, but in 2002, the magazine/former Bible of hip-hop awarded the crew its most prestigious honor--the highly-acclaimed status of 5 mics.

The song was later sampled in 1996 on my favorite Nas song "Take It In Blood", which happened to be the 2nd 'Daily Dose' of all-time back in March 2010.

Nice to take a trip back to the 'golden age of rap' and give props to those that helped paved the way for the music I love. Big ups to Ced Gee, that crazy cat Kool Keith, TR Love, and all the others that put in work to make this possible!

Daily Dose 0178 - Coldplay

0178. Coldplay - Don't Panic

Really peaceful song by Coldplay which always reminds me of the very first episode of Rescue Me. Easily one of my favorite TV programs for the past 5 or 6 years. Unfortunately, the FX drama series is due to wrap its final season this fall--very sad indeed, but at least it was a great run while it lasted.

FYI: The show follows a group of New York City firefighters (FDNY), as they cope with the struggles of every day life post 9/11.

"Don't Panic" plays prominently in the final montage of Rescue Me's premiere, where Tommy Gavin (played by Denis Leary) takes a trip out to the shore and is followed by all the ghosts he has collected over the years. This was the first I ever heard the song and right away, I had to have it.

The combination of a very stirring string of events leading up to the song being played no doubt led to me liking it so much. So much so that I enlisted the services of my boy Sammy Chi to sample the shit out of its contents, just so that I could lace it with my own profound lyricism (please see "Beautiful World/Optimist").

Anyways, here's to a great song and an amazing show that you need to check out immediately if you haven't already done so. Do it!!!

Hands down my favorite female MC/poet/spoken word artist at the moment! Dessa is a member of the Minneapolis hip-hop collective Doomtree, who have been featured consistently on this blog since the dawn of time.

Along with her accomplished skills flippin' ill syllables on the mic, Dessa also has a great singing voice, which she intersperses beautifully between rhymes mid-verse. This can be witnessed on "The Crow", flowing naturally and flawlessly executed despite its high degree of difficulty.

"Into the Spin" was originally included on Doomtree's 2008 group release False Hopes 13, which was packaged with the Doomtree Blowout DVD. This track is solely of the singing variety and exemplifies Dessa's wide range of talents as an artist.

Did I mention, she also published a collection of poetry and fiction entitled Spiral Bound? Ill with the Skill no doubt.

Note: Both of today's songs can be found on Dessa's 2010 debut LP A Badly Broken Code.

Born in Chicago, raised in northern Colorado, and hailing from Seattle (according to his bio); Grieves found a new home with the Minneapolis-based record label in November 2009. Prior to signing with Rhymesayers, the young MC had been touring incessantly since 2003 and dropped 2 albums before joining their reputable underground roster.

I wrote this around the same time as my last Real-time Records entry "Write Brother". This was during my ridiculous 6-month sickness that stretched out from November 2009 until early May 2010. Similar theme to the previous track, just looking forward to getting healthy again and trying to stay positive in an adverse situation.

I'm not the man you know, plans take a stone's throw--away
I gotta keep my head on straight
Now fate's a blank slate, a vision we all create
Another new beginning, no, it's never too late

Those are the lyrics from the chorus and address my life being "A Stone's Throw Away" from where I wanted it to be at the time. I had just been awarded a job at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Whistler, B.C. but unfortunately due to my poor health, I couldn't go. Safe to say, I was crushed. But hey, at least I had music right??

Anyways, I recorded this earlier today and although my skills are still a little rusty, the end result isn't horrible--which is a good thing! Enjoy.

Still pissed that I missed out on Jay Elect's live show in T.O two weeks ago at the Phoenix. Oh well, I guess I'll have to catch him next time. "Shiny Suit Theory" dropped in 2010 and is supposed to be included on his next album, Act II: Patents of Nobility (The Turn), which is due May 3rd.

The newest Roc Nation signee is as smooth as you've come to expect from the über-talented MC, as he more than holds his own with the legendary Jay-Z.

The more I listen Jay (Electronica that is), the more I become impressed with his ability to command an instrumental with his sleepy yet poignant delivery. Definitely looking forward to a full album's worth of music from this cat in the near future!

On another note, this marks the 200th song shared in 175 entries of the 'Daily Dose' to date. Pretty cool...keep listening, will try to have a few gems in the next 200. Peace.

Atmosphere put Minneapolis on the map in terms of underground hip-hop in the mid to late-90's. The duo, consisting of Slug (MC) and Ant (producer), were founding members of the strongly influential independent hip-hop label Rhymesayers in 1995.

I first started listening to Atmosphere in the fall of 2003 on the recommendation of an acquaintance (some of the best advice I have ever received BTW). I had been writing introspective rhymes for over a year at the time but Seven's Travels really opened my eyes to the fact that you could actually 'make it' with this style.

"YGM" comes from the group's free download Strictly Leakage from December 2007 and is on some of that old school shit--a classic battle-type record if you will. Slug slides into the track around the 50-second mark and proceeds to spit two minutes of fire before singing praises to fam as the song winds down.

0173B. Atmosphere - Lyndale Avenue User's Manual

Released in October 2007, Sad Clown Bad Fall 10 is the 2nd of 4 Atmosphere EP's honoring the 4 seasons of the year. "Lyndale Avenue User's Manual" is based on the frustration attached to being stuck in your hometown long after you've outgrown what it can offer (at least that's my interpretation! haha).

"It must be the alcohol, and ya hate this place cuz the town too small." I hears ya.

I happen to be familiar with the subject material. And it's no one's fault either, it just happens to be a fact of life. The need to break away instead of sinking back into old habits with little to no progress being made. Sometimes, this can feel like others are trying to bring you down with them--as Slug alludes to in his lyrics. Sometimes, it's us who bring others down with our own behavior.

This is the first song I ever recorded. Ever. Sammy and I wrote and melted our vocals to wax in either June or July of 2003--not 100% sure anymore. The instrumental of choice "Let 'Em Hang" was provided unknowingly by The Alchemist and originally featured the one and only Nasir Jones and some other dude named Lake.

Really dug The Alchemist's beats back in the day (still do!) and I think on my grand debut I was trying to drop some serious knowledge here. Obviously got way over my head in terms of actually getting a message across, but at least I knew what I was talking about! Haha...not selling out and shit I suppose??? Awesome.

Again, it's fun to look back and have a listen at what I sounded like when I first began making music (literally in this case). Really cool that I got to share the stage with Sammy as well, glad it worked out like that. Wish we could have collaborated more over the years but what can ya do? Life always has a habit of getting in the way, don't it? Hopefully we'll have something fresh for y'all to feast your ears on in the near future!

And Sam, I will make it to Oz some day soon man, promise. Now hook me up with some gosh darn beeeeeeeeats!!! Haha

Today marks the 1-year anniversary of the world-renowned 'Daily Dose'. And since the journey began with the Broken Bells song "The High Road" on March 23, 2010, I figured it was only appropriate to showcase the talented duo of Danger Mouse and James Mercer (The Shins) once again.

Even though it's only March, it's about time you checked out "October"...from the pair's self-titled debut album of last year. FYI: Their follow-up, the 4-song Meyrin Fields EP is set to be released next Tuesday, March 29th.

Taking another trip back to 2002, "Thin Line" is from J5's 3rd studio album Power In Numbers. Featuring Canadian pop songstress Nelly Furtado, the song displays the difficulty of being friends with the opposite sex and having no feelings involved. Eventually, one side catches 'em and then the friendship is forever transformed, putting the two parties at a crossroads when the true emotions finally surface.

Classic chorus by Pharoahe Monch and a solid beat from Ayatollah make this a great track. The lyrics from The LOX's Styles P leave something to be desired but the song's vibe is so infectious, any ol' Ruff Ryders member could sleep-walk through this instrumental and it would still be a hit. Guaranteed.

"The Life" first showed up on Rawkus Records' June 2002 compilation disc Soundbombing III and was later included on Styles' solo debut A Gangster and A Gentleman one month later. Forgot about this song for a bunch of years until now, so to hear it again was certified fresh fer sure!

A tribute to my good friends Matt and Jodi on their engagement, which went down last night between the Ottawa Senators/Tampa Bay Lightning at Scotiabank Place. Near the end of the first intermission, my buddy set up a happy birthday message to be read aloud as it flashed across the scoreboard, followed by "will you marry me?"

Don't worry, she said yes! Nicely done buddy. I know Matt loves him some R&B and Biggie, so here we go with the remix of "Only You"--a fitting song given the events at the Sens game. As an added bonus, Ottawa came back from 2-0 down for a big 3-2 overtime win--obviously as a result of Matt and Jodi's engagement!

Anyways, I just wanted to say congratulations again! I'm thankful to have such great friends and I'm glad I was able to be a part of it all. Love you guys, cheers!

In honor of Pride legend--and present day UFC disappointment--Mirko Cro Cop. "Wild Boys" by Duran Duran is usually his walkout music for his fights, and coincidentally, tonight he takes on The Ultimate Fighter Season 10 runner-up Brendan Schaub at UFC 128 in Newark, New Jersey.

Once regarded as one of the most feared strikers in all of mixed martial arts for his vicious head kicks, it's obvious Cro Cop has lost a few steps in recent years. No longer the man who boldly described his powerful kicks as "right leg, hospital; left leg, cemetery." At this point I really wonder if his heart is still in it, but regardless, I will be cheering for his return to greatness yet again. Good luck Mirko!

Dallas Green. City and Colour. Get it? Got it? Good. Otherwise known as the pleasant singing contributor of the St. Catharines, Ontario hardcore screamo-type band Alexisonfire. I was instantly intrigued at the stark contrast between the two and how they still managed to co-exist on the same track. I admit, I wasn't really a big fan of the group's music--apart from the songs where Green lent his vocals to the mix.

Introspective and engaging in a much softer tone, Dallas' side project/solo venture as City and Colour caught my ear in the fall of 2005. "Save Your Scissors" was the first video single from his debut Sometimes and on the strength of that record alone, I went out and put some money down to buy the album. Great tune but my favorite from the album has to be the opening track "....Off By Heart" which I included here today.

Standing at just 1 minute and 52 seconds, the song captures the listener's attention from the jump with some splendid acoustic guitar playing by Dallas, along with his emotionally charged lyricism. "The stars are aligned, but they don't align for us..." Sick.

Luckyiam is a member of the Living Legends rap crew, an eclectic group of 8 artists based in California. I first became aware of them after listening to the music of another one of its member's--Murs--before making the connection.

"Another Day" debuted on the Living Legends 2006 album Legendary Music: Volume 1 and was later included on Luckyiam's solo venture Most Likely To Succeed the following year. To put it simply, a chill track that is guaranteed to send some positive vibes your way. And because I can't prescribe happy pills (got my license revoked), the next best thing was to include it in the Dose.

The record features the vocalistic stylings of Marty James, who recently collaborated with Snoop D-O-double G on "El Lay" from Snoop's upcoming 11th album Doggumentary (due March 29th). For now, check out the contents above. Thank you.

It saddens me to inform you that Nate Dogg passed away yesterday at the age of 41. The 'Father of G-Funk' had previously battled through two strokes, which I first became aware of last year in May 2010.

In Nate's honor, I am sharing "Regulate", easily one of his most recognized records. Accompanied by Mr. Warren G, the song initially appeared on the soundtrack of the 1994 film Above the Rim. A few months later, it was included on Warren G's debut album Regulate...G Funk Era and greatly contributed to its success.

At this time, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to Nate's closest friends and family.

As soon as you hear this, I'm sure you'll recognize it. "Ooh La La" is from the English rock band Faces and appears on their 1973 album of the same name. This song has been featured in a number of TV shows and movies, but I'm pretty sure the 1998 film Rushmore reminded me of its existence.

A movie I first saw in 2001 during my freshman year at Western in Film Studies--which I failed, sad but true. My idiotic escapade was brought to you in more detail back when I featured a Rolling Stones track from Rushmore last year on April 6, 2010. Ooh La La indeed.

Hands down my favorite song by the Newmarket, Ontario indie rockers. Love the insane imagery of robots taking over the world by the year 2009. A bold prediction considering A Lesson in Crime was released in April 2006. Really appreciate the warning too! I'm just glad humanity has managed to stave off the inevitable robot reign for the time being.

I remember first hearing "Citizens of Tomorrow" and the rest of Tokyo Police Club's powerful 16-minute debut EP cruising around with my buddy T-Bone. Definite props go out to him for being the one to discover and share TPC's music. After listening to the EP a couple times over, I was instantly impressed and had to find that ish the second I got home.

FYI: I happen to name drop this track and TPC in my song "Cool Kids..." My buddy Sammy Chi sampled the Smashing Pumpkins' "1979" and because of when I wrote it, I just flipped the chorus to "shakedown 2000 & 9..." Then added in some lyrics referencing "Citizens of Tomorrow" due to the 2009 connection. Word.

To celebrate gaining an hour of daylight, here is the song "Daylight" by the indie duo from Brooklyn, Matt & Kim. I assume they're a couple but I wonder if they could've picked a better name? Maybe the originality of not being original is different and original in that sense? I think my brain exploded...

Anyways, on to the song. It's an upbeat, different sounding track. Seems fitting that they are also a duo for Vol. 2. Works on so many levels. I've only heard a few songs by these two but they got some catchy melodies and an original sound. So get over the lost hour of sleep, be happy with more daylight and give this a listen.

"Fantastic Voyage" was Coolio's breakout hit in 1994 and received heavy rotation on MTV back when they actually played music videos. From the Compton artist's platinum-selling debut album It Takes A Thief. A record which, according to Wiki: "received praise for bringing a humorous and lighthearted perspective to often violent and profane themes of typical gangsta rap." Coolio.

0161. Wolf People - Tiny Circle

From Steeple (2010), the first proper album of London, England's own Wolf People. I know absolutely nothing about the group other than what I've read from the description provided on the website of their label Jagjaguwar. The English indie rockers bring a psychedelic vibe to the table which I find pretty chill. Fun fact: Steeple was "recorded in a converted chicken barn on the grounds of a 17th century Welsh mansion." Interesting.

Can't take credit for this one though. I was looking for some new music and discovered "Tiny Circle" at indierockcafe.com under their March 9th posting: Best New Releases, Vol. II--linked up here. 0160. LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out

"Don't call it a comeback!" This song kicks some serious ass! From LL's 4th studio album of the same name, circa 1990. This album was a welcome return to form for Mr. Smith after the hugely disappointing Walking with a Panther, released one year before.

The funny thing is, one of the very first hip-hop/rap cassettes I owned (yes, I am getting up there in age thank you) was indeed Walking with a Panther. I remember I had just picked up that new DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince album And In This Corner... and figured it was time to branch out and listen to some more of this hippity-hop music.

The other funny thing of note was of course the fact that I was barely 7 years old at the time and LL's record scared the living shit out of me! No joke, he was rappin' about "Smokin', Dopin'" and "Big Ole Butt(s)"--definitely an eye-opening experience for a young cat such as myself. Oh, the memories!

Anyways, here's to a "Def Jam In the Motherland", and one of my personal favorites.
